Neon Pink & Red Lips

Lately I feel like I have been keeping this "funk" at bay. You know the feeling: trying to ignore the feeling that you are barely keeping your head above water...? That's sort of where I am. I'm bored. However I'm not one hundred percent sure what I'm bored of.

I think it partly has to do with my closet, honestly. I look at it and think "...and??" almost as if I am expecting it to perform some sort of magic trick. Produce a bunny perhaps? Those glitter Miu Miu's I've been eying? Perhaps a slightly thinner version of myself? I have no idea. A winter funk I suppose.

Double Double

Answering a Question: Adidas

I always enjoy reading all of your comments. They make me smile. So whenever I get a direct question I get a little giddy. Yesterday I received a question from a fellow blogger. Question and Answer below:

'Tis true that while wearing more than one scarf might be seen as greedy, I would like to rename the term as economical. Not only am I doubling up on my heat source, but I am also entertaining the idea that I just might possibly be burning extra calories.
Speaking of burning calories, let's talk about exercise and the new sneakers (I believe you call them 'trainers' in your world - wink) that you are contemplating. Are they actually vintage Adidas, or are they 'new' Adidas that are modeled after a vintage pair? If they are actual vintage, I say run. As in away. Vintage shoes that have been worn extensively are bad. bad for your back, your feet and for any future romantic interests. (You could fix this by having the insoles replaced, but I wouldn't suggest you working out in them.)

However if the Adidas shoes are new, you might be okay. I myself don't think of Adidas as a very supportive workout shoe. If you are running, lifting weights or cross-training, you will most likely find that you will need some more support. Your knees and your back will certainly thank you for having it. I do however commend you for wanting to remain ever-so-stylish while breaking a sweat! If you do decide on purchasing the shoes I suggest purchasing supportive insoles that come with adhesive. That way you can get the support and comfort you need, while still sporting your awesome vintage soles. (Oh and please do send a photo!)

Duo Scarves

Just last week I was waxing poetic about the rain and all the warmth it brought to my little heart. Well, it's gone now. This past Friday the weatherman on the news tried to tell me it was going to rain for the next 90 days. Does that sound right? I mean, I've had the weatherman tell me it was bright and sunny when it was gray and overcast. Needless to say, the rain boots that I was so excited about purchasing (finally decided on yellow) are now on hold.

Jenny's Mouthwash: WTF Commercials

In 1994, when I was 10 years old, I participated in a research study.

I was put in a conference room at an ad agency with three other little girls, and shown various commercials. One was for Polly Pocket, another was for Mott's apple juice, and another was for Butterfingers (starring a fairly new character, Bart Simpson).

The other girls and I had to say how the commercials made us feel and if we wanted to purchase the products after seeing them. It was an interesting experience, and I started to pay more attention to commercials in between my favorite shows.

I still watch commercials. But not the flashy, ridiculous ones found on TV today. I love to watch the old ones. I could go on youtube and watch vintage commercials all day long. (And to be honest, I might have actually done that once. I'm sick, please help me).

Back in the 1950s through 1980s, there was something so charming and classy about television commercials. They were so innocent and novel.

And some are just plain weird.

I'm going to share a few of the WTF ones with you.

This first one is for a pain-killer called Anacin from 1965.

Kind of makes you wonder what the "extra" ingredients are, doesn't it?

Here is another one from the same company:

Here is a 1958 Jello commercial which is horribly stereotypical, but I kind of find it adorable. Pleeease don't hate me.

And here is the creepiest commercial I've ever seen:

Sheer and Suede

There is a certain joy in being able to reinvent. It happens all around us: sometimes the act is so common, so revolutionary that the act often goes unnoticed. An egg that develops into a bird, the caterpillar that turns into a butterfly, the post-modern humor of leopard printed calf hair. The tank top that has now become somewhat "winterized" (and by winter I mean mid-sixty degree weather).

I had a bit of shoppers luck today: came across this stunning ring at Banana Republic. It was originally $36, and I got it on sale; it had been marked down 4 times! $10. Don't you love it when that happens? I'm usually not a ring person, but this seemed like something I could pull off.

Laundry Day pt 3

So, something very interesting about these Laundry Day posts: they all seem to happen around the same time of the year. This is my third annual Laundry Day. (Pt 1 and pt 2 )

Today was a beautiful day - running out to the laundry room between the downpours. There is something about large, skyscraping clouds and the fresh scent of rain that just makes everything seem so perfect. (Yes, those are Uggs. Well, Uggs from Costco. I love them. Although they never leave the house; except to take trips to the laundry room!)

The storms continue here in the Sunshine State. Last night a bolt of lightening struck so close to our place that the windows rattled (and I mean the lightening, not the thunder did this), and it was so bright that I even with my eyes closed I swear I saw my own iris. That, and it re-charged the glowing buttons on our remote control. Seriously. I checked.

I of course was completely thrilled by the storm, unlike poor Eloise my cat. She refused to come out from under the bed, and I couldn't stay in it I was so excited. I love extreme weather.

There was a clearing in the storm however. I cannot wait until Spring! Everything will be so fresh and green that I know the urge to roll around in the spring flowers will be completely overwhelming. In the meantime I will enjoy the monsoon rains. They make for the most soothing lullaby.

I'm wearing a red silk Erin Fetherston for Target dress. Do any of you remember that collaboration? This dress was love at first sight. The Peter Pan collar was just too perfect. And the hearts.

This is the last post you will see the gray bag in - it died this weekend. :( It popped off its hinges. So sad. RIP dear bag. You were loved. And slightly abused. (Maybe)

Rainy Days Like These

Northern California has been getting some much needed rain this past weekend. The first day of the storm I decided that I was not going to let the weather affect my dressing. However one sheer maxi skirt and 3 inches of rain later, it was clear that mother nature as always, wins.

There is always a bright side to everything, however. This wonderful plethora of rain had put me on the hunt for rain boots this past weekend, and I am happy to say that with the help of you dear readers, I have picked the perfect shade. French Lessons: Le Palais du Louvre

Le Palais du Louvre of Paris is arguably one of the most famous museums in the world. At over 652,000 square feet in museum space alone (roughly equal to 11 football fields), it holds a plethora of history, art, sculpture, and surprisingly haunting tales. The museum holds so many pieces of art that if you spent one minute in front of each the museum owned, it would take you 3 months to view everything. And, should you get hungry while viewing all of the magnificence, there is a McDonald's (MacDo) located on the lower floor.

For many when they think of the Louvre Museum they think of the Mona Lisa - and quite rightly so. Miss Lisa had been with the Louvre long before it was a museum: she arrived in the mid 1500's during Francis the 1st's reign. What many don't associate with the Louvre however is bloodbaths, terrified new brides running for their lives, riots, and controlling mothers with iron will. Cathrine de Medici and her children experienced just this with the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, which began in the very halls of what is now the most visited museum in the world.

Construction of the Louvre began in the Middle Ages, and by 1190 it served as a fortress (complete with a moat!) to protect Paris from Anglo-Norman invaders. Paris which was the largest city in Europe, quickly found itself surrounding it's very own fortress. By the 14th century Charles V had the fortress remolded into a royal palace: Elaborate reliefs, wall carvings, elegant windows and spiral staircases were all in order. The old fortress had been refashioned into the envy of Europe - a tradition that a young Louis would carry with him all the way to Versailles. As a matter a fact - the construction that started under Charles V lasted all the way up to the 1600's - and construction began once again in 1625. The noise and never ending construction eventually got to Catherine de Medici in 1564, who began another construction project for another palace for her and her children - the Tuileries - where she hoped she could escape the constant noise of the Louvre.

When Louis XIV decided abandon Paris and move the French government to Versailles, construction on the Louvre came to a halt - and remained untouched for nearly a century. It eventually became a residence for artists, and later an art school. In 1792, with the capture and imprisonment of Louis XVI, the Louvre was seized as property of the state and of the people. In 1793 it opened it's doors as a museum. When Napoleon came into power, French armies began using the "museum of the people" as a display space for their loot from conquered kingdoms. As their collection grew, so did the museum's fame. Sure - when Louis XVII came into power much of loot was returned - but the museum later received many donations.

Knit & Brick

From my experience yesterday, I was determined to be better prepared for the weather today. I piled on the knits and layers - and even a knit...cap. Silly thing. I played around with a darker lip today as well; not too sure I like it. It's all about experimenting.

I recently noticed that I have managed to wear pants only twice since the start of 2012. That...is ridiculous. How?? I own pants. I guess the better question is, would you have noticed if I hadn't mentioned it? If the answer is no, then I guess I don't really have anything to worry about. Fermin didn't notice until I said something and we live together.

Aside from not wearing pants - I'm also somewhat obsessed with this sweater. I have been living in it lately. The brand is unique in which all of the items are one size. Chunky loose knits have my name written all over it. You can find a similar sweater here.

Winter's Grip: Lush and H&M

Well lovelies, did you make it through the night? It's been so cold here! Northern California is breaking records with it's freezing temperatures; in one part it actually going down to 16 degrees! I know, I know: for some of you that's the norm. For us it's not! 42 is cold here. For these photos I braved the cold just for you. My full length down coat complete with faux fur lined hood was hidden out of sight.

Where I live all utilities are included in the rent. This means that I often have the heater at full blast - which can be rather disastrous when getting dressed in the morning. With the sun shining bright, and with clear blue skies, I often believe it to be much warmer than it actually is. Hence, the explanation of me wearing a sheer blouse, a tulle dress and no gloves.

Silver and Neon

Bonjour lovelies! Comment tes week-end aller? My Monday was spent getting plenty of fresh air. We visited a friends winery, played tennis, went for a hike around the lake, and later had friends over for dinner. It was wonderful. Also, this weekend we celebrated my sister's birthday.

If you follow me on Twitter, you'll know that I have been dying to get some more color in my life - I think this little green bag provided the jolt I was looking for.

I decided to try a new nail polish technique - Shellac. Have any of you tried it? The polish is supposed to stay on for about 14 days. I love the color - but I'm a little hesitant on how healthy this process is for my nails. Before they apply any polish, the nail technician files down the nail a bit. Also UV lights are used to "cure" the polish dry (I would suggest slathering on an SPF of 30+ beforehand). Over all the process takes about 20-25 minutes. I won't fully know how I feel about this until the shellac comes off and I get to see how healthy my nails are afterwards.

For today's Sunday Post I thought that I would share a few of my favorite posts with you. All of these mean something special to me, and I wanted to share them with you!

Shopping in Monaco took all of my willpower to create. Believe it or not, this trip to Monaco was a heartbreaking one for me to make. It was September 2009 and I had recently moved out to the South of France with the hopes of staying for (at least) a year. Within a month I had to return home. I was so hurt and so discouraged that I had to force myself to keep my head held high. I took a day trip to Monaco to take my mind off things, and I took the trip as a last "hurrah" before I had to leave. I had nowhere to sleep that night, and I was to catch a plane to London the next morning. The night that followed my day trip to Monaco was hell: it was spent cold, sleepless and without a bed - but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Ivanhoe, CA is literally in the middle of nowhere. There are no malls, but there is a Wal-Mart. I think. It is a large farming community and many of those who live there have there own vegetable gardens that they actually use! It was love at first sight. In the summers this place in the middle of California can get to scorching temperatures, and has 88 degree nights. The heat literally takes your breath away. Ivanhoe also has a beautiful lake that sits like a sparkling hidden jewel between mountains. I can't wait to go back! Funny fact? Google Ivanhoe, CA and my blog pops up - images and all!

Alma Mater turned out to be a post that many of you could relate to. In this post I share with you how I returned to my college after being away for a few years. I didn't see any familiar faces, many of the buildings that I knew inside and out (and took secret rendez-vous in) were changed and remodeled. It took a minute for some of my teachers to recognize me. In this post I found myself questioning if one could ever really return home.

Spontaneity in White is a favorite of mine for exactly what you see above. This gentleman who you see is a perfect stranger. A perfect stranger who asked me to dance right there on the sidewalk. How could a girl refuse?

Mixing patterns for Friday. While getting dressed I really loved the concept of the outfit, but something was missing. Then I applied a bright lip color, and bam! there it was. The outfit was complete. Interesting how lip color can play such a large role.

This weekend Fermin and I are taking my sister out for her birthday. Should be fun! Last year we put her behind the wheel and said "drive!" (She had just turned 16). I kept yelling "Faster! Go faster! A snail just whizzed by!" Ah, big sister privileges.

It's the quirky items in my closet that get me out of my pajamas in the morning. For me there is no greater joy than having an item that requires a second look, or have a child take a glance, and then curiously whisper in her mother's ear. I have been stopped on the bus, the sidewalk, and even followed because of quirky items (but not in a creepy way!).

I found this Frida Kahlo bag while visiting Puerto Vallarta. I have a strange fascination with her; her painting haunt me. Yet at the same time I have always tried to ignore her. The woman moved to New Mexico for goodness sake. Who does that? (Georgia O'Keeffe.)

But I also love Miss O'Keeffe.

So maybe I need to move to New Mexico.

I should probably say that I have nothing against New Mexico. Well, I do...but it's completely based on nothing. I've never even been! Have any of you been there? Do you live there? Do you have a fascinating story about the state? Better yet, how did this become a post on New Mexico, and not the Frida Kahlo bag? (Or the birds in flight on my dress? Or the fact that I have a small Japanese town printed on the bottom of it?)

The Crazy Pant/s

This past weekend I went up north to spend a lazy and surprisingly warm afternoon with my sister. We drank root beer floats, tried on hats, and even colored a little bit. Sometimes it's nice to remember the simpler things in life, and not have feel like you're trying too hard.

Can I be honest with you? I love these boots. But this has got to be one of the most abusive relationships I have ever had with a pair of shoes. When I first put them on, there is a fiery-ice cold burning/tingling sensation that goes through the top-half of my right foot. It usually lasts for about five minutes (that's right - contrary to common sense, I don't remove the shoe). I don't think men should be allowed to design women's footwear. They obviously don't care about the comfort level.

Oh - how do you like my pants?! HAHA When I spotted these I was like "YESSS" and my boyfriend was like "NOOO - don't you dare. Amber, you wouldn't..." And then Amber did. And Amber loved it. Still does, actually. I thought they'd be my "man repellers" but, they seem to have the opposite effect actually. Bizarre.

Bouquet of Colors: Orange Bag and Jade Jacket

Why, hello there lovelies! My how things have changed since Sunday's post! How do you like it? The blog got a total, head-to-toe make over! Many thank you's to Melissa. (The little Eiffel Towers just kill me - in the best of ways!)

"horn" bangles: Forever 21

I absolutely love all the colors in this dress: the floral print makes for the perfect opportunity to work many other colors into this outfit. This silk jade blazer with the orange bag and my neon yellow/green scarf just made this outfit so much fun! When I left the house this morning I wasn't wearing the belt. Thanks to Bessie of Bravoe Runway, who alerted me of an amazing sale over at Banana Republic (although she did tease me for walking away with only a belt and a pair of gloves!). This belt gave the outfit that extra "interest" I was looking for. Sometimes color isn't enough!

While taking these photos, we had an impromptu visitor. Such a beautiful kitty! I wanted to take her home to meet Eloise so bad. My boyfriend said non.

Tomorrow, I'll have something else new to show you: my new hair cut!!

Smart is Sexy Sunday's: The Female Image

Today's Smart is Sexy Sunday's post was originally going to be about etiquette. Then while perusing around Barnes and Nobles, I stumbled across a magazine cover that instantly made me angry. That's when I decided that this post was going to be about the female and her image in media today.

In college, I took a class titled Women Artists. We studied Camille Claudel, Leonor Fini, Cindy Sherman and so many others (these three just so happen to be my heroes). I remember how angry I felt when I learned of Rodin and his Camille. How I identified with Cindy Sherman and her "message of feminism", and how guilty I felt when I realized that I referred to male artists by their last name, and to female artists by their first (art history books do it all the time).

I typed in "female image" into Google, and this is what I got

I remember sitting in class and thinking "What is this deep injustice in the world? Why are women treated so sub-par? Why is this still an issue?" Yet years after college, and nearly four years after our country showed the world that we could look past skin color when it came to electing a president, "bitch" -a female breeding dog - is still a word that is used by highly regarded media to describe a woman. I now find myself asking "Are we as women, our own worst enemy?"

I mean hell - look at Anna Wintour. Would you describe her as the warm, and nurturing soul of Vogue? Should she be described as one because she is a woman? Should she be considered any less of a woman because we (the media) want her to have a nurturing, motherly image but doesn't? If women behaved the way the media would have us want them to behave, would any woman be in any position of power? (I would venture to say no, because that "woman" wouldn't want it.)

We still live in a world where a woman is judged not entirely by her education, her status in her community, or her intellect. Who's fault is that? After much thought and introspect, I've found my answer. The fault is mine. I take full responsibility. If the Editor in Chief of a widely circulated and well known magazine who just so happens to be a woman can put this on her front cover:

Then I know that I as a woman, have done something terribly awry. Now the question is, what do I do to change this? How do I speak up to let others around me know that this is something I will no longer tolerate? That media images that glorify rape, child-like pornography (disguised as perfume ads), eating disorders, and sexual abuse is not okay? It's not okay with me! It never was! If this is something that I am so against, then someone please tell me how images such as these and the brands that they represent ended up in my home, on my computer, on my phone, and on my wishlist?

I don't pretend to have all the answers. I'm not even calling for a boycott. However what I am saying is that I do have a lot of thinking to do. I never meant for things to go this far - for the female image to become so low - for women to be treated as sex objects that you can order online - as childlike and objectified playthings. Did you?

Sheer Dresses and Rust-y Walls

Yesterday I was feeling rather under-accomplished. It's only natural, I suppose. With the emotional roller coaster that the Holidays so often are for me, when the craziness dies down and I am left to fall back into old routines, I start to question myself and my goals. As many of you may know my ultimate desire and goal in life is to spend at least a year in France. I actually want to move, and live there. With the departure of a friend of mine back to France (she is from France, and wants to live here in my town just as much as I want to live in France), my heart broke a little. I knew how much she didn't want to get on that plane back home.

Writing about this actually gets me a little teary eyed. Sometimes I feel like I am afraid of my own success; making excuses for myself - as if I am afraid to charge ahead and actually grab what I have been wanting for so many years. Yes I have obstacles such as finances (I withdrew from my France fund to purchase a new camera) that are hard to overcome. But they are not impossible, right? I don't consider myself a very vain or prideful person, but these shoes are sure as heck bringing out some determination in me. I am embarrassed to admit that I have finally met my match in these boots. Who knew that an inadament object - ones that I am determined to wear - could cause me so much trouble? I can't walk in these!

Well, let me rephrase that. These boots are proving to be slightly difficult to run in. However I did have a little 5th grader compliment me on them today, and quite frankly that's all I need. Walk on!

This gorgeous vintage Escada bag unfortunately isn't mine to keep. It's for sale in my Amberie shop. I just had to share it with you though. It's so soft! So shiny! So perfectly perfect. I hope it finds a good and loving home soon.

Well I got into contact with one, and within 15 minutes of the conversation the person on the other line had not only said that rates ranged "anywhere from 12 - 50" (as in thousand and by thousand I mean dollars), but then also suggested that I get myself a makeover, and fast.

On Christmas day Fermin and I went for stroll in one of our favorite state parks. We went camping here earlier this summer - it's so amazing to see how much nature can change in just a few short months. Big, giant oak trees shed their leaves, while in tiny crevices life is just beginning. It's hope renewed. I always take joy in the seasons...it reminds me of rebirth, and how everything is temporary if you give it enough time. I know I have a few friends and fellow bloggers who are having a tough time right now. This too shall pass.

A brief review // HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2011 has been one of growth for me. It has been one of self doubt, struggle, crashing computers, new jobs, new opportunities, family drama, travel, and my very first cruise. I acquired a stalker this year. I took a break from blogging, and relaunched my online store, Amberie. I made new friendships, and rekindled old ones. This year my readership doubled, and I sold a years worth of advertising. Jennifer from I know, Right? became a permanent fixture on the blog with her own monthly feature. I bought my first DSLR. I colored my hair pink, dyed it black (twice) and then brown. I learned how to give my cat pills. I discovered what SEO meant. Returned to France, and had the joy of sharing the city that will forever own my heart with my boyfriend. Discovered Puerto Vallarta. I became Alice in Wonderland.

And then there was you. You my dear reader. I have not had to struggle alone because of you. This year the blog got a lot more personal. I shared with you my frustrations, fears, and the twilight world that I sometimes get caught up in as a fashion blogger. I shared with you my fear and anger of my "cruise ship stalker". I shared with you my joy of re-launching Amberie - some of you even featured it on your blogs. You gave me words of comfort and encouragement though the hard times, and you were there for the high-fives in the times of joy. For that, thank you. You have kept me grounded.

I learned valuable lessons this year. Perhaps two of the most pertinent were: I cannot live in the past. While staying with my grandfather this summer (where I became Alice in Wonderland), I came to discover that living in the past can often result in the over-romancing of the past. Rose tinted glasses can sometimes be dangerous. Lessons are not learned that way. When I returned to my Alma Mater I discovered that I was a stranger in what was once my own home. We cannot thrive in the past; we must keep moving forward.

The second lesson that I learned is that I cannot live through others. No philosophical thought here. You are the best you; no one else can be you like you.

Jenny's Mouthwash: The Goodbye Kid

Grant was like a brother to me.

We used to do everything together, since birth.

As little kids living in Florida, we would run along the beach, collecting sea shells and riding the waves. We would spend weekends playing our favorite computer games and having sleepovers. We loved to turn off all the lights at night and see who could scare the crap out of the other with the most frightening ghost story.

He was the first person to read every single story I ever wrote. He loved them all and it really boosted my confidence. His belief in me shaped the writer I am today. He thought I was awesome, and I believed he was right.

When we were in middle school, Grant bought best friends necklaces for us. We wore those necklaces every single day until high school.

That's when things started to change.

We didn't hang out as much. Grant was the baseball star of his high school and all his best friends were preppy jocks. He grew tall and handsome and muscular. Girls were crazy about him and I didn't blame them.

I grew in another direction. I became editor of my high school newspaper. My friends thrived on academia and preferred poetry slams at coffee shops, rather than attending football games.

By the time we got to college, we still e-mailed occasionally but we rarely spoke in person.

I went to a university in a big city and by coincidence, Grant ended up getting a baseball scholarship at a college three hours away from me, in a little country town. He joined a fraternity and started a cocaine-using partying lifestyle unrecognizable to me.

I went to visit him a couple times, but he kept making excuses for returning the favor. He kept promising he'd visit. He kept making plans and cancelling them at the last minute. Finally, he did make it to the city for a baseball conference, and one morning we agreed to meet at a small diner an hour away from my apartment.

I sat there in the parking lot, waiting...waiting...for two hours. He finally called and said he wouldn't be able to make it. He was too hungover and he didn't want to make the 15 minute drive from his hotel.

We haven't spoken since.

I found out from his mom a few years later, that during college he used to come up to the big city all the time with his fellow frat brothers, but was careful never to tell me. I guess he didn't think I was cool enough to hang out with his friends.

I found out on facebook he's living in Chicago and he is engaged now, to a girl who is just as superficial as him. He's no longer on speaking terms with his family, because they think she's a manipulative bitch. But he doesn't care. She's rich and high-society and she got him a manager position at her daddy's construction firm.

Sometimes it's hard to swallow how people who were once so close, grew so far apart. How can two people who were inseparable during childhood become strangers as adults?

Was he always a douchebag? Did I just never notice? When did I start being too uncool to hang out with? Was it when I got braces?

Sometimes I don't like to remember my childhood, because I can still feel his presence in my life, like it was yesterday.

And it breaks my heart to know my happiest memories involve running along the beach, shouting with laughter, with a best friend who would one day fade away as quickly as the grains of sand dispersing through the wind.

How was your holiday my dear? Did Santa spoil you? I sure hope so! As you can see, I went shopping. Again. Remember my purple shimmer dress? Well, I bought it in orange! I also bought a Brandy Melville sweater. Photos soon! Aside from shopping and consuming a copious amount of cookies, I've also been singing The Beatles Rockband all weekend long. I love The Beatles!! I'm in "story mode" and have been getting 5 stars in all the performances.

Aside from the dress and sweater, I also bought this bright neon pink scarf. I loved my yellow one so much, that I thought that the pink one would be a perfect addition! Well... I should have known that at $8, that the yarn would be cheap, and that it would shed all over every single thing that it touched. Ah well. Let's think of it as bringing color to every situation.

Keeping Things Casual // Black Cape

I believe I had a few of you ask if I ever "just wore jeans?" The answer is a loud resounding yes! I actually love jeans. I cannot imagine a life without them, in fact. Up until last year I didn't even own pants - all I had was jeans. I had to go out and buy a pair of black slacks for an interview because my trouser jeans didn't count ( after that information I suddenly wasn't interested in the position).

BAM! Denim! I love Gap jeans. I know there are bigger and more expensive brands out there: Rock Revivals, Miss Me, Paper Cloth and Denim, Sevens...The list goes on and on. I'll take Gap, thanks. They are still rather expensive for me, so it's been about a year since I last bought a pair. For some reason it's easier for me to justify a $60 pair of shoes than a pair of jeans for the same price. Maybe it's because I know the shoes will always fit, and can't shrink in the wash.

I wish you could feel this cape by Big Star (also a denim brand). It is so amazingly soft! I bought this with a long plane flight in mind (I'll be taking one in Feb). I've been wearing it every day since I bought it - which was Sunday! I could live in it.

[Okay. I'm running out of things to say.] I am also in love with this bag. I bought this recently too. I should do a purse post.

Sheer Purple Shimmer and Neon Scarf

Is it possible to post an outfit post everyday on the blog? I am toying with the idea. Perhaps not an outfit post every.single.day... but rather, an actual post? To me that whispers of [blog burnout] danger. I am in love with my new camera. Let's call this the honeymoon stage, shall we? I hope it never ends.

Today was my last day of work before the holiday. I am a little embarrassed to say that this scarf, this dress and the purse all are new. But the scarf was $8. I love the color. It makes me happy and keeps me warm. This dress on the other hand only does one of these two things.

How are you keeping up with all the last minute holiday shopping rush? I'm rediscovering just how much I hate crowds. And traffic. And drivers. If you follow me on twitter, you'll know that I had a breakdown (tears) in a Target parking lot last Friday. Nothing big - I just couldn't find my keys (they were in my pocket). Holiday stress.

See, that is where this scarf comes into play. Bight cheery colors to lessen the mayhem. Funny how this little $8 items has completely stolen the show for me - whereas the dress...well, quite frankly this dress is amazing. It shimmers. It's closeup is coming (same for the bag).

Quick post today.

Mixing prints on a large scale today. I always tend to gravitate towards dress styles like this one: free form and in my mind "effortless" but really, for me they always end up taking much more effort than anticipated. I always hope that the dress will make a statement in itself, but I end up feeling uncomfortable - like something is missing.

However - pairing this dress with my leopard print coat ended up being a paring I was quite happy with! I quite love it, in fact.

First off, I want to apologize for not getting the French Lessons post up when I said that I would. That was really lame of me. I'm sorry. I have excuses up the wazoo for it, but, I'll spare you.

Now, back to regular programming.

Last week I attended the Photobooth event. The invite said "fashion blogger galore!" and, they were right. Funny thing about fashion bloggers? Everyone has cameras; no one is taking photos. (I think it was in the name of press - everyone wanted someone else to take their photo and put it on a blog other than theirs. Fair enough I guess. I of course said "eff this" and started taking my own photos. I have coined a term for this situation: SSCH. If you figure it out, let me know. )

The event was celebrating a new Polaroid product - when you walked through the door, the models (modeling clothing from a local pop-up shop) snapped your photo and gave you the cute miniature result. I love mine. It's in my wallet. My other wallet. No photo for you :(

After Megan and I hopped into the taxi at Union St., it was off to Valencia. Blending fashion and technololgy twice over in one night? Yes please! It was the perfect blend of a crowd - the men most certainly looked the tech-y part, while the women - well...we were all beautiful goddesses if I must say so myself. The women were the perfect blend of beauty, wits and smarts.

If you're with me on my facebook page, then you'll know the story about all the different Coach bags. This one here is my third and final one! Ahhh! What am I going to open Christmas morning?! Doesn't matter; I am still so excited to call these all mine!

The talkTech event was co-hosted by PeopleBrowsr and Three Day Rule; essentially a mash-up of some of the best start-ups in San Francisco and Silicon Valley's. We were in great company!

Union Street Boutique Crawl, SF

On Tuesday night Megan and I headed into the city to participate in the first Union St. Boutique Crawl! We had two events to attend, and this was our first stop. We scored major in all sorts of ways that night: parking on Fillmore, polite cabbies and we discovered a new wine. Not to mention Hope from Marmalade is also a fellow Paris-lover. Fate.

Our first stop was at 3038 Fillmore: Simply Chic. This place is absolutely, undeniably and breathtakingly stunning. Stunning. Honestly, I debated about telling you about this place. It is so amazing that I kind of wanted to keep this information for myself. See that bag above? That was literally waiting for me when we walked through the door. I just looked at it. The gentleman holding it said "Oh, I know."

Next stop, we ducked into Covet on Union. Covet lives up to it's name: Megan and I both pretty much wanted everything we saw. (It was there that Adrienne introduced us to a new wine: Moscato, by Beringer Winery. Fun fact? I used to be the Berringer family au pair!)

Quote of the night? While asking an "almost 40" woman for her secrets of youthful appearance, she replied:

"I eat like a whore"

I died. So there you have it lovelies!!! Want to stay young?! I mean, what does it mean?!!

Our final stop before heading off to our 2nd agenda for the night was Marmalade. Hope, the boutique owner, is traveling to Paris for the first time for the new year. I'm so excited for her! (Hope if you're reading this, let's get together and prendre un cafè!!)

This weekend I got to hang out with two of my favorite city dwellers: Kathryn and Heather. Kathryn and I first met back in 2009, and I swear: her personality can warm up any Foggy City day. Both Kathryn (of Kathryn McCarron) and Heather (of Guevarra Arcega Clothing) are amazing fashion designers - Kathryn just landed her styles in the ah-mazing Dish store, and Heather, a fellow Hawai'i native just got picked up by an Oahu boutique! I couldn't be happier for them both!

The open studios at the Art Explosion (744 Alabama) is always such a treat: all the artists in the three story building open up their doors and let both visitors and buyers peruse, and get a glimpse into the inner world of their chosen craft. If you ever get a chance to visit their quarterly open studios, you must go! Chances are I will be there, "standing guard" of Heather's pocky sticks - with alternate motives, of course.

Lately I have been making an effort in mixing patterns and textures when dressing. I surprised myself when getting dressed - it seemed that everything somehow color coordinated! Being able to mix patterns, textures, and still have color harmony (as in similar, not complimentary) was something unexpected.

The New Camera // Eloise

If you are a fan on the Amber's Mouthwash Facebook page, then you will know that I have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of my new camera. While I am still deciding on what to name my new camera (Canon EOS Rebel T2i), that hasn't stopped me from taking it with me everywhere, and snapping the beautiful photos i have wished my little point and shoot could. Eloise, my sweet little domestic longhair, has proved to be the most willing model.

Unfortunately, since my area for the photos is so small, it's difficult to see the amazing detail. In one photo, you could see her fur vibrating due to her purr!

She's quite the little model, isn't she? I love her so much, my little fluffer butt.

Polka Dots and Miu Mius

I absolutely love winter light. Northern California seems to be fashionably late to the seasonal transitions, but it's got the light just perfect. This morning it was so dark at 9am, that I considered crawling back into the sheets and resting for a few more hours.

Of course, heading back under the covers is completely out of the question - especially today. My new camera has arrived! I am itching to get out and take photos of everything I possibly can. Eloise (my beautiful domestic longhair), is my newest muse. Today I captured some absolutely stunning photos that I cannot wait to share! Alma Mater

Holding my college's publication, Campus Chronicle

While my mother was visiting we took a serendipitous trip to my Alma Mater. It had been nearly two years since I had last visited - part of me had wanted to visit, and another part of me was resisting it. I knew that many changes had taken place since I had left, and I was worried that I would feel like a stranger in that was really one of the true places I considered home.

I am so lucky to have attended college in such a beautiful area. Nestled in the heart of the Napa Valley, tucked in between mountains and ever changing leaves of the surrounding grape vines, Pacific Union College will always have a (large) piece of my heart. When we arrived, all the familiar scents of the trees and fresh air brought me crashing back to all my experiences. I did so much growing up on this campus; and with that came many growing pains. Of course there were fun times too: Christmas caroling (bikinis and Uggs!), voice lessons in Paulin, Marla and our adventures as roommates, being the default "free guest" with Mr. Morphis on class museum trips in the city, Taking every history class Dr. Douglas offered (only 5 classes short of a major - why? Because she didn't teach those 5 classes), Megan and our live Christmas tree, and of course churning those 10 page Honors class paper out 5 hours before they were due ...

When I saw many of the renovations, it actually brought me close to tears: not only did I not recognize any of the students faces, I now no longer recognized many of the once familiar places on campus. When I visited my beloved faculty, it took them a few seconds to remember me (maybe it was the hair?). I could feel a knot in my stomach begin to grow: was it true? Could one never return home? What had once been mine: my dorm room, my spot in the cafeteria, my job of 4 years at the Rassmussen Art Gallery - now belonged to a new generation of students.

I eventually ran into a friend - quite possibly the last familiar thread in the woven tapestry of future and past. While I don't know the answer to our ability to return home, I will have to hold on to the hope that home rests in memory: the ability to see and remember; to know that perhaps home isn't a physical place, but a space in our hearts.

Holiday Spirit

I do apologize for the sideways photos; silly phone won't rotate the photos! Think of it as a new outlook on life...

Every year, for the past four years, my boyfriend and I go on a shopping spree extravaganza: for Lego's. Well, not only Lego's - Hello Kitty dolls, Xia Xia crabs, super hero's, toy trucks, play doh, arts and crafts and more!
The tradition started with my boyfriend, Fermin: one year he saved up so he could donate a sum of money over seas, in Egypt. Now, every holiday season we look forward to having the opportunity to give children gifts they might not otherwise have to chance to receive.
Honestly, this was all Fermin's idea. I am continuously humbled by his generosity. This year, my mother and sister joined in on the fun!

I know that during this time of the year it's easy to get stressed: we get sick, the family is in town, money may be tight - but I have found that there can be joy in giving: especially when nothing is expected in return. This season I want to encourage us all to give: whether it's being extra patient with the lost driver ahead of us, smiling at the customer in line who can't decide on her coffee, or putting an extra coin in a meter is about to run out.

One very tough thing about running an online store is having passion: passion for the hunt of vintage items, passion to restore them to their full glory, and then the wisdom to let them go (aka the passion to see your business grow). The perfect example of this is this beautiful Coach bag. I love this bag! I mean, I love it. I might even marry it.

But if I want to see my business thrive, and if I want to continue to strive to develop a reputation for my store, this lovely bag has to go.

So happy that Fall has finally come to northern California. There is a crisp in the air - even when the skies are perfectly clear.

I literally screamed when the transaction went through. Scared the mess out both my cat and myself. I've never spent this much on anything - including tickets to France. I am currently a bundle of emotions: happy, excited, scared, nervous, and I've got a bit of guilt too. My camera is scheduled to arrive by next week.
I haven't even told my boyfriend about this yet!

I was searching for beauty tips the other day, when I stumbled upon a blogging icon from Japan. Her name is Masako Mizutani. Isn't she pretty?

Oh, and did I mention her age? Masako Mizutani is 43 years old.

Yeah, that's right. This Asian model is a housewife with a 20-year-old daughter! And she has NEVER had plastic surgery.

Masako's doll-like appearance, ethreal aura, ageless skin, and big brown eyes have made her an object of obsession for millions of men and women all over the world.

There is even a Chinese blog dedicated to her, which has already reached more than 10,000 followers.

In interviews, Masako has stated she spends five hours per day taking care of her skin.

Now that is true dedication to being gorgeous! Would you spend that much time on your face?!

In several interviews, Masako has graciously given tips on how to look younger. She follows these simple, everyday rules, which I have paraphrased here:

Get off your butt: Exercising is not only good for your health, but does wonders for your appearance. It helps tighten skin and give your face a healthy glow.

Get rid of the other butt: Smoking has been proven to speed up the normal aging process of skin, causing premature wrinkles. Looking for a more scientific answer? Mayo Clinic states, "The nicotine in cigarettes causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin. This impairs blood flow to your skin. With less blood flow, your skin doesn't get as much oxygen and important nutrients, such as vitamin A. Many of the more than 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke also damage collagen and elastin, which are fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. As a result, skin begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely because of smoking."

Eat healthy, fresh food: Eat three to four balanced meals per day. More specific foods designed to help you look younger include sweet potatoes, salmon, tomatoes, citrus, leafy greens, and red wine.

Drink lots of water: Well, um, duh.

ALWAYS APPLY SUNSCREEN IF YOU'RE GOING IN THE SUN: Your mother warned you and now this hot Japanese chick is doing the same. Listen, girls, listen.

Moisturize like it's your job: Masako prefers vitamin-E based creams or lotions. She cannot emphasize enough the importance of keeping your skin (all over your body) soft.

Are you ready for Thanksgiving? Today I went shopping after putting together the menu for the big day: Cornbread dressing (with veggie sausage and granny smith apples), baked yams with marshmallows, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, cranberry compote, mulled/spiced wine, turkey (pre-baked - vegetarians don't cook turkeys!) pumpkin pie, dinner rolls... Whew!

It is a holiday tradition that I make the entire dinner, by myself.

Why, hello there lovelies! How are you? Me, well...I'm having a bit of an issue. You see I'm rather sick of myself at the moment. I'm with myself all day. Everywhere I go, there I am. I'm in my head all day, and sometimes, blogging, keeping up on twitter, facebook etc, only makes it worse. I am actually quite literally, tired of seeing myself.

This has to be some sort of condition.

You see, it seems that no matter what I do, or how hard I try I'm always disappointing someone. Did so-and-so see that awesome job I did on such-and-such? No; but they did make it pour acid rain for that little mistake I made. Did I plan out my day to be super productive, only to change it at the last minute so I could meet up with a friend, only to have said friend push back impromptu meeting by 2 hours (which left me with a completely unproductive day)? Yes and yes.

Wait what's that? You've experienced this too?

Well, shit. There goes my whole "poor little victim" me speech.

Guess we're all in this together.

A Shoppers Guide to Shopping; The Do's and Don'ts

Well dear readers, as I sit here on a gray and rainy morning in my newly purchased "fluffy clothes" (my new, completely mis-matched set of pajama pants that are so wrong they're right, zipper robe and house slippers that are so fluffy they look like a small animal), one thing is certainly clear: the holiday season is upon us! It is now time to head out to your nearest coffee shop and grab peppermint-chocolate something, re-locate your favorite pair of gloves, and dig out your weather proof boots. Oh, and your wallet.

Because dear readers the holiday season also means that you are going to be performing copious amounts of shopping. Shopping for you, your best friend, your mother, your father, your sister, your brother (maybe), your boyfriend, your cousin, your co-worker who may or may not be plotting against you ( buy her a gift to throw her off), and then that cute boy who works next door. And then you. Again. In other words plenty of shopping, at plenty of stores.

It is in this acknowledgement that I have decided to issue a public service announcement of sorts: A Shoppers Guide to Shopping; the Do's and Don'ts. Follow the shopping tips below (all of which come from personal experience and observation), and I can personally guarantee you an awesome holiday shopping experience.

Don't shop drunk.
Now, I know that you and your girlfriend haven't seen each other in a while, and you just wanted to "catch up". I also know that you skipped lunch at work in order to make up for the calories you planned on drinking with her: the fact that your using the clothing racks to prop yourself up is a dead giveaway. But here's the thing: when you ask the sales girl to get you that "amazing" pair of boots - again - and she has to point out that she already did, and that they are on your feet, you know it's time to call it a night. Also, just imagine how you're going to feel the next morning when you find your receipt: $400. And guess what? No returns. Which leads me to...

Do know the shops policies before you buy.
Do they accept returns? If so, how many days do you have? Do the tags have to remain attached? If they do take returns are there any exceptions? If they don't take returns, is exchange or store credit an option? Always ask before you buy. Ignorance is never a winning policy.

Do look your sales person in the eye.
When the sales person approaches to ask you a question, take items from you, help you with a size - anything - make eye contact. I cannot stress this enough. Many people who are perfectly polite in their day to day lives seem to forget all basic manners when shopping. Your salesperson is just that - a person. Treat them like one. Make eye contact, say "please" and remember your "thank you"s.

Don't bring your entire group of girlfriends.
Why do you need all 17 of your girlfriends to voice their opinion on a pair of jeans that you like? It will take 20 minutes for them all to decide if they really like it, and they will all end up having the same question: "Well, what do you think?" And you know what will happen? You'll have Jane take a picture of your butt, and you'll send the picture to your boyfriend, and since he's always been bad with texting you back right away, you'll put the jeans on hold, and leave without them. Bottom line? Shop alone. Or, bring one or two girlfriends with you (at the very most).

Do place your items back on the hanger.
From the young age that a child first gains their dexterity, they are held responsible for putting things back in their proper place. You know who doesn't have dexterity? A newborn. Newborns also poop on themselves. The proper place for that dress you just tried on is the hanger, not the floor.

Do keep keep your proper under garments on.
When trying on anything that comes close to your crotch (which in this case is anything and everything), please for the love of all things holy, keep your underwear on. Saleswomen notice everything. That snail trail you left on the body suit? Yes, she noticed. She also told all of her coworkers, and there was an e-mail sent out about it too. Also, you've been blacklisted. It would be in your very best interest to avoid that store for the rest of your life. Folks, wear underwear.

Do leave your children at home.
Unless you are shopping for the child and you need to see how a will garment fit them, or it is a shopping trip for them, leave your children at home. The super trendy boutique that you love shopping at? They don't carry children's clothing. That was on purpose. Those small dressing rooms that don't fit a stroller? Yes, that was on purpose too. The saleswomen know that when you enter with your children, it will only be a matter of time before little Jimmy is playing with the rings, little Suzie is hiding in the clothing racks, and mom is pretending to be blissfully unaware, hiding in the dressing room

Don't make the salesperson play charades.
In other words, when you enter the store please put your cell phone away.

Don't be a last minute shopper.
It's 7 minutes before the store closes, and you just want to :

        A. shop the denim wall: you are the hunt for the perfect pair of jeans.
        B. Buy an outfit to your coworkers wedding. Which is tomorrow.
        C. Shop.
      D. See if they have that thing you've been wanting, by that brand, that kinda looks like that one thing that famous girl was wearing in that magazine last month. In blue. Or navy. You haven't decided yet.

Correct answer? None of the above.

If you just want a quick look around, if it's your first time seeing the store, or if you have finally found the boutique that your best friend has been talking about non-stop, than by all means, poke your head in. But if you are coming in to actually shop - don't. The only exception is if you know the exact item, it's location, color, and the size.

But wait - what if it's not the customer? What if it's the salesgirl?!
Oh We have all been there, haven't we? We enter a boutique, or a high end store and the saleswoman thinks she knows everything about us: and her conclusion is that we are not worth her time, or manners. If you're just there to browse, and not really intent on purchasing anything, don't worry about it. Sometimes working in a high-end retail environment can go to an employee's head.
However if the salesperson goes out of their way to be condescending or rude, take action: Quietly, in a calm and controlled manner, tell the sales person exactly what you are experiencing: their judgmental attitude, and their rude behavior. By being perfectly direct, and remaining emotionally in control, you will most likely have one very surprised, apologetic, and suddenly very helpful sales clerk on your hands.

And there you have it! So what you do you think? Any that I've forgotten?

Seeing Red: My new Lush Dress

Lately, I've really had the desire to go camping. Why, just a few weeks ago I was hugging trees promising to return with a tent. But alas here I am once again surrounded by trees, with no tent in sight. (It didn't fit in my clutch.) Perhaps next time.

The grey skies, and on-and-off rain made taking these photos rather challenging. However, I did have fun romping through the suburban green hills. Interesting fact? I actually had to dust off these shoes! I honestly cannot remember how long it's been since I've worn them! They've got a bit of a "witchy" feel to them, wouldn't you say?

I have been really craving a cape as of late. In camel tone. If I somehow miraculously get my hands on a cape, it has to be in camel (color).

I've also been itching to get some bright red into my wardrobe, and more lady-like items. Honestly, I'm not even quite sure what I mean by "lady-like", because I have the biggest love affair with chunky boots and heels, that I'm not quite sure how I would pull it off.

Apparently fate works wonders online too. Readers, I truly do value you; I cannot stress how important it is to remain safe and protected online (day to day life as well, of course). In her guest post, Amy of Adult Dating Sites gives some very helpful pointers of remaining safe online.

How to Play it Safe on Facebook

In today’s 2011, there’s a good chance that you’ve heard of a little thing called Facebook. With access from home, work, and even on the go you have the ability to see what your best friend is having for lunch, find out what your long lost 6^th grade boyfriend is up to, share pictures from your fabulous weekend in New York and even check-in at your favorite wine bar.

So we all know that Facebook offers a plethora of fun tools that enable you to chronicle your life, share with friends, expose your opinions and connect with new people…but with over 800 million users world-wide and more than 50% of those users logging on several times a day, it comes as zero surprise that you have the possibility of encountering someone through the most visited website on the internet (after Google) who doesn’t have the best of intentions.

To maintain your status as the most Facebook-savvy social networking butterfly in your group of friends, follow these few tips that will ensure a fun sharing experience while at the same time protecting yourself from the dangers lurking behind every friend request or poke:

Restrict access to your profile. Facebook offers privacy settings and security features that are in place to protect you. It is a good idea to take the time to learn how to use these settings to control what information of yours is shared with people, applications and other websites. Although it is suggested to use the highest level of security by setting the controls so that only your friends can view your info, review these settings and choose the ones right for you.

Keep your password safe. There are cases of Facebook accounts being hacked into and used to gain personal information of yours or to send hurtful information to others. To avoid situations like these, it is important to guard the password to your account. Use a password that can’t be easily guessed, don’t share it with anyone and make sure that it is different from your other online logins.

Who are your friends? With the obscene number of people signed up to Facebook, it is likely that you have received friend requests from randoms you don’t know. It may be tempting to accept for the thrill of connecting with someone new, but if you don’t know this person, it’s in your best interest to just ignore the request and stick to interacting only with people you know.

Be careful of what you post. It can be a lot of fun to share your adventures with friends by posting what’s been going on in your life—but think before you post. If you check-in somewhere, create a status stating where you plan to meet your friends, or post a mobile upload to your Facebook profile of you out on the town, this will alert predators of your whereabouts which can make you vulnerable to physical attacks or burglary.

Also, it is important to note that you should avoid posting any pics of yourself that could put your morals or values in question. Many Facebook users have had their jobs or academic careers compromised because of pictures showing them partying or engaging in behavior that doesn’t reflect a positive light upon an organization to which they belong.

Use your common sense. Carefully review your Facebook page and try to see it through the eyes of someone with malicious intentions. If there is anything you have posted on your profile that could pose risks if the wrong person were to get their hands on it, remove the content immediately.

Remember to listen to your instincts and if your gut is telling you there is something wrong, it’s likely that there is—trust that feeling and get out of a potentially dangerous situation. If anyone is violating the terms of Facebook or making you uncomfortable, the site makes it easy to un-friend, block, and report any online abuse so that the site can take appropriate action against the problem-causing user.

Trick or Treat? The coat version

This coat has got quite the story. In the spirit of Halloween, I figured I'd give it a Trick or Treat spin. I'll tell you two stories; one will be true [the treat], and the other will be false [the trick], and you tell me which one is which!

First story:

It was a lazy Sunday, early afternoon. There I was, in the park, minding my own business when from around the corner, came a homeless man. For my town this would be nothing out of the ordinary. We have homeless shelters, that invite them to stay for the night, and by 9am, they hit the streets by the droves. However what stood out was his awesome style - and the fact that he was wearing two coats, and carrying two extra ones.

"Wanna buy a coat?" He asked. I shook my head no. Turns out he had gotten them free at our local Occupation protest. "Do you know any place that will want to buy some?" I suggested that he try a store two blocks down. As he started to walk away, something caught my eye - it looked like wool, and it had leather toggle buttons.

"That's a really nice coat you've got!" I said, pointing at the one hanging on his arm. "I'll sell it to you" He responded. I told him that I only had $10 on me. "Done!" He said.

And the coat was mine.

second story:

I have a thing for crackers. As a matter a fact whenever we buy them at the store, my boyfriend takes to hiding them from me while he's gone (otherwise I'll consume the entire box in a day). I've even been known to stuff crackers into my pockets when preparing to leave the house. Don't judge me.

Our little studio is so small that every summer as soon as the weather gets warm, all of our cold weather coats and scarves go into storage. This week we went to go get the coats out of storage. The experience is always like a mini-Christmas: "Oh how I have missed this ______". So imagine my glee when we unpacked this coat. Scooping up my collection of cold weather fashions, we piled them into the trunk, and brought them home.

Once home however, it seemed that my dear kitty Eloise, had a new vested interest in my coat. As a matter a fact, she kept trying to dive IN-to it. To get her off the coat, I picked it up and moved it to the bed - and that's when I saw it. A mouse.

There was a mouse living in my coat!! Turns out there were some left over crackers from who knows when, but he had found them and had decided to stay!!

Dressing with...Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian,

Monsieur Mondrian like many artists had a love affair with the City of Lights, Paris. He also had quite the mustache: it was similar to his artwork in that it was simple, not over done, but not easily over looked either.

Piet Mondrian described his art work as "a search for beauty in it's most simple (honest) form"; line, shape and color. Don't all colors stem from the primary? And don't all shades and hues ride the slope of black and white? In a time where the population was trying desperately to recover from a world war, frivolity seemed like a fairytale: foreign, silly, and only for those refused to face reality. Mondrian wanted a simple world. A realistic world. But above all, he wanted a world where beauty could still exist, unspoilt. The world it seemed, had gone gray - and he wanted to add a bit of color.

On a Darker Note...

I have a confession. I know I have been sharing with you my amazing experiences on the cruise, and the beautiful photos from the places that I visited, but there was also something rather dark and frightening that came along with my time at sea.
I acquired a stalker.

It began with a simple request to dance. My sister and I had discovered the rather addictive appeal to Karaoke, and had just finished "supporting" another performer by dancing while she sang. I sat down in my seat, as another got up to sing. A man made his way across the room and asked me to dance. Innocent enough right? I said yes, we introduced ourselves, and when it was over I sat down. I thought that was it.

I thought wrong.

What followed quickly turned into a cat and mouse game. He found me the next day in the lobby and wanted to hang out - since he was with a group of people, I made the incorrect assumption that "hanging out" meant with him and the others. When I found out that it didn't, I excused myself.

Things started to get uncomfortable when I caught one of his friends secretly photographing me when he thought I wasn't looking. He had come with a group of 95 other people - what was my photo being used for? At first I thought I was being paranoid; until he began showing up everywhere I was. The scenario was like this: I'd see or pass by a person from the group (that I knew of), and 5 - 10 minutes later, he would show up. He showed up in the lobby, the pool (and there were 6 of them), the jacuzzi I was in, my stateroom floor.

He wanted to know my room number, my last name (none of which I gave), he would follow me to where I ate and sit down wherever I was seated, he'd appear on the dance floor when I was with my mother.I would have perfect strangers come up and tell me where he was - as if he were looking for me, and wanted people to direct me to him. Had he and his 95 friends distributed my photo amongst themselves? His friends began coming up to my mother and asking her questions about me. I spoke to the staff, and they offered to have security follow me so that they could idenify him, since I basically didn't have any information on the guy.

Here I was, on my very first cruise ever. I was absolutely loving the ocean views, the travel, and the new experiences. I was loving the crew, my waitstaff, and the friends I was meeting along the way: but this man and appartent lack of personal boundaries was threatening to ruin my entire trip. It goes without saying that being on a boat, I felt trapped.

Finally, I got angry. Here I was on this incredible, once in a lifetime cruise with my family, and here was this creep who couldn't take a hint, making me feel violated and uneasy. I was checking over my shoulder everywhere and he was behaving like he owned me.

The last night of the cruise, he snuck up behind the couch I was seated on an leaned over me. And I snapped. Afterwards I was so shaky that I just wanted to go back to my room. I was sure that I had been firm, and that I had put him in his place, and that now everything had been settled.

The night I disembarked the ship I had a friendship request from him waiting for me on Facebook. How on earth has he gotten my last name?

I had honestly thought that I had left him, and his pathetic drama on the boat, out at sea. But really, he had followed me home. I've had nightmares of seeing him here in my hometown. And while part of me feels foolish for letting the experience affect me in such a powerful way, I also have to come to terms with the fact that it really did frighten me. It's taken an emotional toll that I didn't expect, and it's affected my blogging as well. I can't help wonder if this man is now reading my blog as well.

French Lessons: Le Ballon Rouge

Long before Sophia Coppola's short film for the Miss Dior Chérie perfume, and the Disney-Pixar film Up, there was Albert Lamorisse's short film, Le Ballon Rouge.

Filmed in 1956, in the Montmartre neighborhoods of Paris, the film is about a boy and his magical red balloon that follows him around the city. Pascal, the little boy in the film discovers the balloon while on his way to school. The two quickly become friends; they share in the adventures of an overbearing school master, a stray puppy, and school bullies.

Set against a backdrop of a grey Paris (perhaps winter), Pascal and his balloon brighten the scene wherever they go.

There is a delicate innocence about the film that immediately draws you in. Pascal is simple in the fact that he doesn't require much from his friend; he only wants companionship. While on his lunch break from school, the two play a game of hide and seek.

What Lamorisse was able to do in his 34 minutes of film was create absolute magic. There is very little dialogue. Rather, he chose to communicate through color and music. The final result is a film that captures the memory of childhood, and the nostalgic innocence that we remember it.

Jenny's Mouthwash: Lana Del Rey

Hi Readers! I have something that I am super excited to share with you. As you know, Jennifer Fabulous, from I Know, Right? has been a frequent guest blogger here on Amber's Mouthwash. Well, I've decided to give her a permanent spot here on the blog. Every month she will post here on Amber's Mouthwash, and her feature is called Jenny's Mouthwash! I'm so excited! Hello friends, it's Jennifer Fabulous! I am so excited to have a regular feature on Amber's Mouthwash!

I've always felt like Amber's blog was the prettier and more charming sister to my own, so I'm really flattered she asked me to be part of her world!

For those of you who do not know me, I am a fashion-obsessed journalist who blogs about pop culture, my crazy life, films, and interesting celebrities.

My feature here will basically be a little taste of my blog every month. It's going to be completely random and utterly fabulous, I promise.

Anyway, enough about me! Let's get on to my first post.

Recently, Amber and I fell in love with a song, Video Games, by a recently discovered musician, Lana Del Rey.

I was really excited to learn more about Lana. Keyword: was.

You see, there used to be a time when movie studios would manufacture stars. Actors were given different names, allowed to spin their own backgrounds, and basically reinvent themselves as completely different people.

Unfortunately for Lana Del Rey, those days of 1950s Hollywood are over.

Mostly because technology, such as the internet, allows anyone to research your past. And Hollywood quickly realized the public isn't stupid.

I was so optimistic about Lana. I truly believed there was a new star on the horizon, destined to bring us into a delicious soul-infused music revolution.

After all, her latest single, Video Games, is hauntingly beautiful and heartbreakingly eery.

When I saw the video, I was a little confused by the cheesy montage of hipster youtube clips and I was creeped out by Lana's botched lip job, but I merely figured she was a little rough around the edges and let's face it, not everyone is perfect.

Plus, I discovered that Lana made the video herself, by looking up random youtube clips. It's not every day that a recording artist makes their own video, so I cut her some slack.

It wasn't until I researched for this post, that I realized the joke is on us.

Lana Del Rey isn't the hottest new discovery in the music industry. She was carefully crafted by a ruthless band of managers and music producers, who are hungry to Americanize and cash in on the British white female soul singer phenomenon.

First of all, her name isn't really Lana Del Rey. The 26-year-old has admitted the stage name was chosen for her by managers who thought her music would sell better if it was reminiscent of Hollywood glamour.

In some interviews, Lana claims she grew up in a trailer park in New Jersey, in other interviews she admits she went to boarding school.

In reality, Lana Del Rey is Lizzie Grant, the daughter of a wealthy internet mogul. You can read a cover story about him here, from four years ago.

Clearly, this is not a girl who grew up in a trailer park.

And then there is the plastic surgery. Those awful floppy Donald Duck lips that sway with the wind.

The reason her fake lips bother me is for two reasons. One, Lana was a pretty girl without them. And two, she claims she has NEVER HAD HER LIPS DONE.

Let's take a look, shall we?

The fact that in interviews she denies having her lips done is insulting to not only her fans, but to anyone with eyes.

I would have more respect for her if she had told interviewers that her lips got stung by a wasp every single day. Because even though she would be lying, at least we could all share a good laugh. But no, she chooses to take us all for fools instead.

When she's not busy getting her lips injected, Lana enjoys giving herself pretentious titles she hasn't earned yet. She calls herself the "gangsta Nancy Sinatra" and describes her own look as "Lolita in the 'hood." If you watched her music video earlier in this post, you are probably wondering why the hell she calls herself these things. I'm still baffled.

Her blatant lies and drastically altered image have already caused huge controversy amongst music bloggers. She has been labeled the "Frankenstein of Indie."

Some people may argue that her makeover is no different than the pop princesses you see every day, such as Lady Gaga or Britney Spears.

But there is a difference. Pop music is based on image. It is based on the unreality.

But Lana's soulful ghost-like crooning belongs to an entirely different category: real music.

How are we supposed to believe the pain in her voice and respect her as an artist, when she's more processed than a freshly-wrapped Twinkie?

I want to believe her. I want to respect her.

When I close my eyes and allow my ears to drink up her smoky melody, laced with beauty and dripping with sadness, a part of me does.

But then I open my eyes and I don't.
